Ocean State Marathon Course Preview: 26.2 Miles of Rhode Island’s Best Views

There’s no better way to experience coastal Rhode Island than on foot — and the Ocean State Marathon in Narragansett gives you exactly that opportunity. From the sound of the waves at the start line to the scenic backroads and historic landmarks along the way, this course is as beautiful as it is challenging. Whether you’re chasing a Boston Qualifier or checking another marathon off your list, here’s a full preview of what to expect on race day.

The Start Line – Narragansett Town Beach

The marathon begins right next to Narragansett Town Beach, one of the most iconic spots in the state. As the sun rises over the Atlantic, runners line up with a view that’s hard to beat. It’s an inspiring place to take those first strides — ocean breeze in the air, the sound of seagulls overhead, and that pre-race buzz of anticipation.

Miles 1–4 – Settling In on Old Boston Neck Road

Once you leave the beach behind, the first few miles take you along Boston Neck Road and Old Boston Neck Road, a scenic 4-mile stretch that sets the tone for the rest of the race. The road runs parallel to the coast, offering glimpses of the ocean between the trees and quiet residential stretches where locals often cheer from their driveways.

The terrain here is mostly flat with a few gentle rollers — perfect for easing into your rhythm and shaking off the pre-race nerves. It’s wide enough to let runners spread out, and the morning light filtering through the trees makes for one of the most peaceful segments of the entire course.

By the time you approach Mile 4, you’ll be fully settled into your pace, warmed up, and ready to take on the rest of the route.

Miles 4–8 – Bonnet Shores and Beyond

After leaving the bustle of Narragansett, the course winds through Bonnet Shores and Allagash Trail, where you’ll find yourself surrounded by tree-lined roads and glimpses of the coastline. This stretch offers some gentle rollers that keep things interesting without being overwhelming.

Strategically placed aid stations every 2 miles make sure you’re always supported — whether you need water, electrolytes, or just a friendly word of encouragement from our volunteers.

Around Mile 8, the full marathoners continue north while the half marathoners prepare to split off. It’s here where the crowds thin a bit, and you can settle into your rhythm as the race turns toward the quieter sections of the route.

Miles 8–20 – The Heart of the Course

This is where the Ocean State Marathon really shines. Runners head into North Kingstown and South Kingstown, moving along peaceful stretches of road framed by historic stone walls, farm fields, and small-town charm.

The marathon course is USATF-certified, which means every mile marker, turn, and tangent has been precisely measured for accuracy — giving you confidence that your hard-earned finish time truly counts.

This section also brings a mix of terrain — long straightaways, some gradual climbs, and a few rolling descents. The challenge here isn’t just physical; it’s mental, as you dig deep and focus on maintaining your pace.

Miles 20–25 – Back Toward the Coast

When you make the turn back toward Narragansett, you’ll start to feel that ocean air again — a refreshing sign that the finish line isn’t far off. Runners loop back down Boston Neck Road, retracing part of the early miles but seeing it through a new lens — with 20+ miles already behind you.

This is where grit meets beauty. The crowds grow again as you near town, with locals cheering from driveways, cyclists riding alongside for encouragement, and volunteers making sure every runner feels supported.

The Final Stretch – Mile 26 and the Finish Line

The final mile brings you back to Narragansett Town Beach, where the finish line awaits just steps from the sand. The sound of waves, the cheers of spectators, and the view of The Towers in the distance create an unforgettable finish experience.

Crossing the line here is something special — you’ve conquered 26.2 miles of true Rhode Island terrain, from farmland to seacoast.

  • Pacing: The first half is relatively fast and flat — don’t go out too hard! Save some energy for the small climbs and mental push of the late miles.
  • Weather: Late October mornings can be cool at the start but warm up quickly under the sun. Layer smart and adjust your hydration accordingly.
  • Support: With aid stations roughly every 2 miles, you’ll never go long without help. Take advantage of them early and often.
  • Scenery: Look up once in a while — this is one of New England’s most scenic marathons for a reason!
