As the sun rises over the picturesque coastal town of Newport, anticipation fills the air, echoing the rhythmic heartbeat of seasoned runners and passionate newcomers alike. The Newport Marathon, hosted by Rhode Races, promises not only a challenging test of endurance but also a scenic journey through the heart of this historic and charming destination.

The Starting Line: Enthusiastic Energy at Easton’s Beach

Picture yourself at the starting line, surrounded by the echoes of centuries-old architecture and the invigorating scent of the salty sea breeze. The Newport Marathon, as well as the half marathon, begins its course at beautiful Easton’s Beach, offering runners a unique blend of historic charm and maritime magic.

Miles 1-5: Coastal Serenity and Mansion Majesty

As the race kicks off, participants will swiftly navigate through the early miles, guided by the undulating sound of crashing waves. The course unveils the breathtaking coastal scenery for which Newport is renowned. Runners will trace the shoreline, catching glimpses of luxurious mansions that stand as silent witnesses to the city’s storied past. The initial segment of this course poses some small challenges, offering a mix of climbs and descents that will liven up the legs. Once past this early phase, focus on finding your groove to navigate the rest of the race with greater ease. As the first five miles unfold, be on the lookout for the first two aid stations for some early hydration. Aid station #1 will be located approximately around mile 2 in Kings Park, with Aid station #2 just two miles behind down in the Fort Adams State Park.

Miles 6-13.1: Rolling Hills and Nature’s Symphony

The latter section of the half-marathon unfolds into a notably flatter terrain, inviting runners to lock into their pace and put their extensive training to the test. Embarking on a four-mile stretch along the renowned Ocean Ave in Newport, participants confront one of the most beautiful challenges of their athletic journey. These mid-race miles not only off you stunning seaside vistas but also vibrant and happy daffodils popping up all over the course. Throughout these miles, there might be ocean breezes so it’s imperative to push negative thoughts aside, for the taste of crossing that finish line is just beginning to touch your lips. This segment boasts four strategically placed aid stations at miles 6 (Brenton Point), 8 (Goose Neck Cove), 9.5 (Spouting Rock), and 11.5 (Miley Hall @ Salve Regina). Emphasizing the importance of hydration, these stations are a vital component of the race, and underestimating their significance could undermine months of hard work in a matter of minutes.

Miles 13-17.5: Easton’s and Sachuest Point

Beyond the halfway mark, the next few miles offer a soothing respite for the runner. Often considered the most picturesque segment of the course, this leg guides you through the charming neighborhoods of Easton’s Point. The route continues along the ocean side, traversing Hanging Rock Road and Sachuest Point Road, culminating in a turnaround just before the parking lot of the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.

Immersed in the serenity of this scenic stretch, with the crisp ocean breeze as your companion, it becomes an opportunity to momentarily set aside the rigors of the race and savor the journey. Amidst the beauty of Easton’s Point, three strategically placed aid stations await runners. The initial one graces the parking lot of Easton’s Beach before the onward journey. The subsequent two share the same location on the short out and back, located at the Gazebo at Hanging Rock and Sachuest Point, come into play around miles 15 and 17.5, providing essential support and ensuring runners stay hydrated and energized during this scenic and tranquil stretch of the race.

Miles 17.5-26.2: Middletown to the Finish!

Once making the turn at the Gazebo and getting a drink at the Hanging Rock aid station, you can say goodbye for a 7 mile stretch for an up and back through the town of Middletown on Indian Ave. Take a quick pit stop at our Aid station where Peckham Ave crosses Indian ave near mile markers 20 and 22. The final stretch of the Newport Marathon invites participants to draw upon their reserves, with the finish line standing as a symbol of triumph and accomplishment. As you approach the climax of your journey, the historic architecture reemerges, taking a peek at the spires of St. George’s to your right. These symbols providing a scenic backdrop for those last, exhilarating strides toward victory.
