Mike Proto
A special breed of runner whose infectious energy and enthusiasm have made a lasting impact on Rhode Races. Mike’s commitment to our events is unparalleled; he is a proud Rhode Master, always eager to participate and embody the spirit of our community. For Mike, the sense of fellowship at our events is a major draw, as he values the camaraderie and friendships he’s formed over the years. His dedication to Rhode Races is evident in his unwavering attendance, making each race a priority. Mike’s humorous and lighthearted approach to running—where fitness goals take a backseat to fun—brings a unique and joyful vibe to our races.
Mike’s favorite aspects of Rhode Races include our great organization, the fun of hanging out with friends, and, of course, enjoying his cooler full of adult beverages at the finish line. Though he can’t single out one particular moment, Mike assures us that every race is filled with great memories (at least the ones he can recall!). His loyalty is unwavering, stating “the locations play no role whatsoever, as I would follow (Rhode Races) anywhere.” Mike Proto, thank you for being such an integral part of Rhode Races and for reminding us all that running is as much about joy and friendship as it is about the miles.
Kim Resare
We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Kim Resare, a runner whose passion and energy have become a cornerstone of Rhode Races. Kim’s journey with us began in 2016 when she ran her first half marathon at the Bristol Independence Half, and she was instantly attached. “I ran my first half marathon in 2016 at the Bristol Independence Half. I was hooked after that and looking for more of a challenge. I believe I moved on to 3 a year and then 5 half marathons sounded like a good challenge. Now, I can’t imagine NOT being a Rhode Master. I think I would have too much FOMO if I didn’t do it,” she shared. For Kim, the sense of collectiveness at our events is a major draw. “I love seeing familiar faces at every race and I love meeting new people…either in the porta-pot line or just in passing during the race. It is always a fun-filled event with loads of smiles and support.” Kim’s dedication and spirit exemplify what it means to be a part of the Rhode Races family.
Kim’s participation in our events has had a significant impact on her running journey and fitness goals. Being a Rhode Master keeps her consistently in shape, ready to take on a half marathon at any time. She finds our races always well-organized and enjoyable, even when the weather isn’t ideal. Among her many memorable moments, she cherishes the experience of running her first half marathon as a testament to her strength and resilience, especially living with MS for 13 years at that time. “It was a big deal for me because it was my 13th year living with MS and I was running to prove to myself that I could do it. Now, 8 years later, I’ve run 5 full marathons and 28 half marathons. I’m hooked! It has been the best thing for me mentally and physically and I’m going to keep doing it for as long as I can.” Kim’s love for the race locations, the camaraderie, and the much-loved swag keeps her coming back year after year. Her journey with Rhode Races has not only been transformative but also a source of pride and joy, making her feel like a true “badass” every step of the way. Thank you, Kim, for your unwavering support and for being such an inspiring part of our races.
Kathy Russell
For one dedicated Rhode Races participant, the sense of familiarity is what makes our events truly special. “Being a small state, you see the same faces at most of the events. I’ve gotten to know some by name now, especially those who seem to run at a similar pace as myself.” Running with her friend inspired her to take on half marathons, and now, participating in Rhode Races has become a key part of her fitness journey. The local races and the unique swag—especially the connecting medals—are major draws, but it’s the experiences that stand out the most. A highlight of her journey was finally achieving a personal record at the 2022 Ocean State Half after 9 ½ years, even while dealing with plantar fasciitis. “My mental toughness did not let me give up on my goals.”
Beyond the races, she values the thoughtful amenities like parking at First Beach and race-day bib pickup, which she describes as “game changers.” As a Rhode Master, she appreciates the savings and perks, but what excites her most is the potential for connection with fellow runners. “I am an introvert by definition, but get me around a bunch of fellow runners, and I can talk for hours!” Her journey with Rhode Races is a testament to the power of perseverance, camaraderie, and the joy of being part of a close-knit community that goes beyond just running.
John Wiechecki
While some runners thrive in the social aspects of race day, others, like our featured Rhode Master, prefer the solitude of the long run. Describing himself as a “lone wolf,” he acknowledges that even though he’s more of an independent runner, the consistent and familiar faces at Rhode Races events create a welcoming atmosphere. “It’s a pretty consistent cast of characters year after year, and it is a fun atmosphere (at least when the weather cooperates).” The Rhode Races Strava group has also been a surprising source of connection, allowing him to meet and recognize fellow runners at races. For someone who typically runs solo, the camaraderie of Rhode Races has subtly woven itself into his experience, making the events feel like a shared journey.
His journey with Rhode Races began as a way to explore the beauty of Rhode Island after moving to the state in 2016. What started as a method to discover the area has evolved into a cornerstone of his running life. “I need a race on the calendar for motivation, so having 5 each year is even better.” The beauty of the courses and the impeccable organization of the races keep him coming back year after year. He recalls a memorable moment from the 2017 Jamestown race, where, despite a sleepless night, he managed to secure 8th place and set a personal record. “Running is funny sometimes,” he muses, capturing the unpredictable nature of the sport. For him, the Rhode Races series not only provides motivation and beautiful courses but also serves as a reminder of why he continues to run—to stay healthy, active, and connected to a close circle that, despite his lone wolf tendencies, has become a significant part of his life.
